Christian discernment is the prayerful and continuing practice of recognizing that movement, testing our understanding of it, and learning to cooperate with God’s purposes.

Our concern is not simply what people believe, but how those beliefs shape the way they live, relate to others, exercise responsibility, and participate in God’s work in the world.

Christlike Love Is Our Guiding Principle

Our guiding conviction is simple: Christlike love is the measure of faithful discernment.

By Christlike love, we mean agapē: a self-giving commitment to seek the genuine good of others, expressed through compassion, truthfulness, justice, humility, forgiveness, and responsible action.

Such love does not require agreement, excuse wrongdoing, or avoid difficult decisions. It calls us to respect the dignity of every person, including those with whom we disagree, and to seek their well-being alongside our own.

Jesus Christ provides our central example of love expressed through both compassion and moral courage. His life and teachings challenge us to move beyond narrow self-interest toward service, reconciliation, and concern for others.

We should therefore examine our beliefs, decisions, relationships, and institutions not only for what they accomplish, but also for the kind of people they help us become.

The Holy Spirit and Christian Discernment

We believe the Holy Spirit remains actively involved in human life, guiding, encouraging, correcting, and empowering people toward God’s purposes.

Divine guidance may be experienced through Scripture, prayer, thoughtful reflection, relationships, circumstances, and sometimes through an inward prompting or intuition.

Yet personal conviction alone does not establish that a prompting comes from God. Human beings can misunderstand their experiences, confuse personal desires with divine guidance, or overlook important consequences.

For this reason, discernment requires humility, reason, prayer, moral responsibility, and a willingness to listen to others.

Scripture encourages believers not to quench the Spirit, but to test what they encounter and hold fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21).

The fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22–23 provides an important measure of spiritual maturity and faithful living.

The Spirit leads. Humans interpret. Communities discern.

We seek openness to the Holy Spirit without abandoning thoughtful examination, accountability, or responsible judgment.

Becoming More Fully Human

We understand spiritual growth as a continuing movement away from narrow self-interest and toward the purposes for which God created humanity.

Human life is more than the pursuit of personal achievement, material success, social standing, or institutional recognition.

We believe every person possesses inherent dignity and the capacity for spiritual growth. Through relationships, experiences, learning, service, and reflection, we may become increasingly capable of expressing God’s love.

Romans 12:2 describes transformation through the renewal of the mind, enabling believers to discern God’s will.

Philippians 2:3–5 calls us to consider the interests of others and cultivate the mind of Christ.

Spiritual maturity therefore involves more than accumulating religious knowledge. It calls for transformation in our motivations, character, relationships, and actions.

We believe God lovingly and persistently draws humanity toward the fullness of life for which we were created. Throughout our earthly lives, we remain free to cooperate with or resist that guidance.

Through prayer, reflection, relationships, and the experiences of life, we learn to recognize God’s movement and respond with love, wisdom, and responsible action.

We do not claim to know everything about what lies beyond earthly life. We approach that mystery with faith, hope, and humility.

Our responsibility in this life is to recognize God’s loving invitation and cooperate with it through faithful choices.

Discernment Is a Continuing Journey

Faithful discernment is not simply about reaching the right decision. It is also about becoming the kind of people who can recognize and respond to God’s purposes.

We recognize that life’s obstacles, disagreements, and disappointments can become occasions for reflection and growth.

Difficulties do not automatically mean that we have chosen the wrong direction. Nor does an easy path necessarily indicate divine approval.

Rather, circumstances invite us to examine our assumptions, motivations, actions, and relationships.

Discernment requires the courage to reconsider our direction when necessary and the perseverance to continue when faithfulness requires a difficult journey.

A decision may conclude deliberation, but it does not necessarily complete the work of discernment.

We continue learning through the consequences of our choices and through the character and relationships that develop over time.

Faith, Freedom, and Responsibility

We believe genuine spiritual growth requires both openness to God’s guidance and personal responsibility for our choices.

Faith does not eliminate the need to think, question, learn, or exercise judgment.

We recognize that sincere Christians may understand Scripture, spiritual experience, and theological traditions differently.

These differences need not prevent respectful conversation, mutual learning, or cooperation in serving others.

We encourage intellectual honesty, freedom of conscience, and the willingness to examine one’s own convictions.

Our purpose is not to require theological uniformity but to encourage faithful inquiry grounded in love, truthfulness, humility, and accountability.

The Church and Its Responsibility

We believe Christian institutions, no less than individuals, are called to continuing discernment and spiritual transformation.

The Church exists not merely to preserve its structures, protect its authority, or maintain institutional tranquility, but to participate faithfully in God’s purposes.

Its decisions and practices should reflect the character of Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

This requires meaningful participation, careful attention to truth, responsible use of authority, respect for human dignity, and accountability for consequences.

We recognize that ecclesiastical authority carries responsibilities, especially when decisions significantly affect the lives, ministries, and reputations of others.

Presbyterian polity offers important commitments to shared governance, ordered decision-making, and mutual accountability. We seek to explore how these commitments can be practiced with greater wisdom, compassion, fairness, and openness to the Holy Spirit.

Our interest is not simply whether a decision is constitutionally permissible, but whether the process through which it is reached demonstrates faithful Christian discernment.

Shalom: The Horizon of Our Journey

Our ultimate horizon is shalom—the peace, justice, reconciliation, well-being, and wholeness God intends for creation.

Shalom is more than the absence of conflict. It is more than personal tranquility or institutional harmony.

It includes right relationships, human dignity, truthfulness, justice, compassion, and the flourishing of individuals and communities.

We understand the fruit of the Spirit as evidence of spiritual transformation and shalom as the broader horizon toward which that transformation moves us.

Fruit is evidence; shalom is the horizon.

We believe that every person can participate in this movement through ordinary acts of love, responsible choices, meaningful relationships, and service to others.

Our calling is not simply to understand shalom, but to become instruments through which God’s purposes for wholeness are increasingly expressed in the world.

Our Invitation

Presbyterian Discernment Forum welcomes those who wish to explore the relationship between Christian faith, spiritual experience, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible action.

We welcome sincere questions, different perspectives, constructive disagreement, and a willingness to learn.

We do not claim to possess all the answers. We believe faithful discernment requires continuing openness to truth, to one another, and to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Our hope is to encourage individuals, congregations, and Christian institutions to grow in wisdom, love, courage, humility, and responsibility.

We seek to help people become more fully human, more attentive to God’s presence, and more capable of participating in God’s continuing work toward shalom.

Presbyterian Discernment Forum is an independent initiative and does not officially represent the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or any of its councils or agencies.

Presbyterian Discernment Forum (PDforum) is an independent Christian forum dedicated to exploring how faith, reason, experience, Scripture, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit can help us become more fully the people God created us to be.
